GYN Services

What are GYN services?

Gynecology services include testing and procedures that monitor a woman’s reproductive health. They can include:

  • Pelvic exam
  • Breast exam
  • Pap test
  • STD testing and treatment
  • Birth control counseling
  • Menopause management

If you’ve never experienced trouble with your reproductive health, you should start receiving GYN services around age 21 or when you become sexually active. Although everyone’s needs are different, most healthy women only need these services once a year.

What should you expect during your first GYN appointment?

During your first GYN appointment, a team member at Bland Clinic takes your weight and blood pressure then shows you to a private room where they offer you a medical gown and blanket. You’re asked to remove all your clothing and they leave you alone to change.

Once the doctor’s ready, they knock on the door to let you know they’re entering the room. They often start with a pelvic exam, asking you to lay back on the exam table and put your feet into the stirrups at the bottom. This position allows your doctor to examine the outside of your reproductive organs and anal area, looking for any abnormalities.

Your doctor then inserts a device called a speculum to open your vaginal lips and looks inside. They examine around your cervix and the opening to your uterus. If you need a Pap test, they use a small brush to remove a few cells that will be sent away for testing.

The doctor removes the speculum and performs a palpitation exam, where they place two fingers into your vagina and press up while pressing down on your abdomen. This gives the doctor the ability to feel your reproductive organs.

Your doctor then examines your breasts, feeling for abnormal growths. The doctor may also counsel you on safe sex, sexually transmitted diseases, and contraception.

What are the benefits of having your family doctor provide GYN services?

When you schedule your GYN services with your family doctor, you have a doctor that already knows you and your health issues. What’s more, if you’re ever having problems, you can discuss your GYN issues with Dr. Bland without having to have a separate appointment.
